USDA Smart Snack in School Guidelines
The USDA has issues regulations for all food outside of the school meal program sold to students during the school day, including fundraisers, vending items and ala carte items.
Smart Snack in Schools Calculator
Use the Smart Snack Calculator to determine if a food or beverage complies with the USDA Smart Snack guidelines.
We know that birthdays and holidays are important to every child and that kids like to celebrate with their classmates. However, sending in a food treat to the classroom to celebrate can exclude those children who have food allergies, diabetes, celiac disease or other dietary restrictions. In addition, frequent sugary snacks do not contribute to achieving our goal of healthy bodies and healthy eating habits for all students. We encourage the use of non-food items for classroom parties and celebrations. You can find some ideas by clicking on the link above.

The following disclaimer must be included on all fundraisers involving food that does not comply with nutrition standards.
Penn Cambria SD recognizes that student wellness and proper nutrition are related to a student’s physical well-being, growth, development, and readiness to learn. The Board of Education is committed to providing a school environment that promotes student wellness, proper nutrition education and regular physical activity as part of the total learning experience. Please be advised that this fundraiser does not support PCSD’s wellness initiative in that the products sold are not consistent with healthy eating habits.
