Curriculum Overview

Penn Cambria School District offers a curriculum aligned to the PA Core Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics and aligned to the PA Academic Standards in other subject areas.

In kindergarten, the curriculum focuses on early literacy and early numeracy skills while including science, social studies, art, music, and more in the classroom.  Reach for Reading is used as our core reading series with students also participating in guided reading and KidWriting during the day.  Go Math is the core math series used in kindergarten. Students participate in physical education/health, art, music, computer and library classes each week as well.  Second Step, a social-emotional learning curriculum, is implemented throughout the year in each classroom.

In grades 1-2, the classroom curriculum includes math, science, social studies, and language arts.  We employ a balanced approach in language arts with Reach for Reading as a core reading program, an emphasis on writing, and guided reading.  Go Math is used as the core math series at PC Primary.  In addition, students participate in music, art, physical education/health, library, and computer classes on a rotating basis throughout the year.   Title 1 services include a full-time reading specialist, a split-time reading specialist, and a full-time intervention teacher providing support for struggling students. Second Step, a social-emotional learning curriculum, is implemented throughout the year in each classroom.

In grades 3-4, the core curriculum includes  math, language arts, science, and social studies.  Go Math is used as the core math series. Elevate Science is used as the core science series. Students begin participating in Accelerated Reader to encourage independent reading outside of school in fourth grade.  Time for handwriting instruction is included within the schedule.  Students participate in music, art, physical education/health, library, and computer classes on a rotating basis throughout the year.  Title 1 services include a reading specialist/instructional coach who provides intervention services and co-teaching in classrooms.  Second Step, a social-emotional learning curriculum, is implemented throughout the year in each classroom.

In grades 5-8, the curriculum includes science, social studies, math, and a double-period per day of language arts.  Students also participate in two “specials” per day that include physical education/health, family and consumer science, music, art, technology education, and computers.  Go Math is used as the core math series in grades 5-6 while grades 7-8 have a local curriculum directly aligned to PA core standards. Elevate Science is used in grades 5-8 as the core science series. During one quarter of the year, students have a study hall period and participate in guidance lessons, library, and other special programs. Second Step, a social-emotional learning curriculum, is included each week for all students.  Band is offered as an elective offering for interested students.  All students have the opportunity to participate in chorus as well.

At the high school level, all students participate in a series of core course work in English, math, science, and social studies.  Vocational education is available through Admiral Peary Vo-Tech.  There are G.P.A. weighted honors level courses available for interested students who meet the prerequisites.  There are also dual enrollment offerings available in English, math, science, social studies, and Spanish.  Spanish is provided as a foreign language on-site class with additional foreign language offerings provided through on-line instruction.  All students participate in physical education/health.  In addition, a variety of electives are available including art, band, chorus, family and consumer science, technology, business, social studies, science, math, public speaking, creative writing, and more.
